Friday, April 4, 2025 by Felix Ortiz

A significant accident occurred on Friday morning in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, leaving nearly twenty individuals injured, as reported by local authorities. The incident took place in the Irijoa area of Palma Soriano and involved a passenger truck carrying 19 locals, including four elderly individuals, according to the municipal government of Palma Soriano.

The injured were taken to the Main Emergency Unit in the region to receive medical care. So far, no fatalities have been reported, only minor injuries that, according to official reports, "do not endanger the patients' lives."

Authorities from the municipality arrived at the scene of the incident, but the reasons for the accident remain unclear. Images shared on social media show the truck overturned on the roadside and the injured being attended to in the medical facility.

This accident follows another tragic event in the same eastern province. A young motorcyclist died near the Antonio Maceo Plaza in Santiago de Cuba after a collision between a motorcycle and a "pisicorre," which was asking for the right of way to transport a drugged minor.

According to local sources cited by journalist Yosmany Mayeta, the "pisicorre" was requesting passage, but the motorcyclist had the green light when the collision occurred. The young man, identified as 30-year-old Miguel Argüelles, reportedly died instantly, lying on the street.

Despite the year 2025 starting with a decrease in traffic accidents in Cuba compared to January of the previous year, the number of fatalities rose. By the end of January, there were 87 fewer accidents (422) and two fewer injured individuals (552) compared to the same period in 2024. However, the number of deaths increased, reaching 65 fatalities, six more than in 2024.

The most common type of accident continues to be vehicle collisions, with 260 cases, resulting in 28 deaths and 226 injuries. These are followed by rollovers with 67 accidents, 13 deaths, and 125 injuries, as well as pedestrian accidents with 66 incidents, 9 deaths, and 63 injuries.
