Western Cuba is set to experience a cold front this coming Tuesday, according to Cuban meteorologists. The lowest temperatures are expected to be recorded on Thursday.
Raydel Ruisánchez, a specialist from the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET), confirmed on Saturday that forecasts indicate the system is moving through the Gulf of Mexico and will reach western Cuba by Tuesday afternoon.
In his statement, Ruisánchez noted that cloud cover will begin to increase on Tuesday morning, with isolated showers possible. Rain will become more frequent in the afternoon, and there is a chance of thunderstorms.
"Winds will be variable and light, initially blowing from the southwest to west at speeds between 10 and 25 km/h. By Wednesday, they will shift to the north, increasing to 15 to 30 km/h. The sea conditions will start with light waves, gradually escalating to swells along the northwestern coast," he explained.
While Monday is expected to be warm, temperatures will drop further by Wednesday morning, with lows anticipated between 15 and 18°C on Thursday.
The latest weather update from INSMET indicates that on Tuesday, the sky will be partly cloudy, becoming overcast with a high probability of rain. Minimum temperatures for the day are forecasted to be between 21 and 23°C, with highs ranging from 28-31°C. Winds will be light and variable, shifting from the southwest to west in the afternoon with speeds between 5-20 km/h.
Wednesday also presents a high likelihood of rain. The morning will be overcast, transitioning to partly cloudy in the afternoon. Minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 20 and 22°C, while highs will be between 24 and 26°C. Northern winds will blow at speeds between 15-30 km/h, causing swells on the northern coast with waves reaching 1.6 meters, while the southern coast will see light waves around 0.5 meters.
By Thursday, temperatures will dip to between 15-19°C, with highs from 26-29°C. On Friday, lows are expected to range between 17-20°C, and highs will be around 28-30°C. Northeast winds will blow at speeds between 10-25 km/h.
In late March, Cuba experienced a notable temperature drop, marking the lowest values for the month in several areas across the country. According to the INSMET, the coldest minimums were reported in western and central regions, where temperatures fell below 12 degrees Celsius.
This significant decrease was attributed to a combination of clear skies, weak winds, and conditions favorable for nighttime cooling, particularly in inland areas.
What stood out most was that in certain parts of the western and central island, temperatures plummeted to unusually low levels for this time of year, as highlighted in the statement. Although April won't see such drastic drops, Cubans may need their coats once again.
