Stunning Flood Images Emerge from Havana After Torrential Rains

Wednesday, April 9, 2025 by Grace Ramos

This Tuesday, severe rainstorms coupled with thunder and lightning battered western Cuba, with Havana bearing the brunt of the weather's wrath. The deluge led to substantial flooding across various parts of the capital, turning streets into rivers and leaving vehicles nearly submerged.

Photos circulating on social media depict avenues transformed into waterways and homes encircled by water. In certain areas, water levels rose to over half a meter, disrupting mobility and causing concern among residents. Neighborhoods such as Centro Habana, Cerro, and those near the Malecón are experiencing high levels of accumulated water.

The Institute of Meteorology has reported persistent atmospheric instability in the western part of the country, warning that more downpours are possible in the coming hours. Cuban meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez attributed these adverse weather conditions to the prior activity of a cold front, which has been triggering frequent showers and thunderstorms.

According to Ruisánchez, "Tomorrow, the front that is almost stationary in the west of the country will move towards the central provinces. This shift will heighten the chances of rain, particularly in the afternoon, with the potential for heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms." He noted that while weather conditions are expected to improve in the west, "isolated showers are still anticipated during the early morning and morning hours. The day will be cool in this region, with north winds and swells on the north coast."

The public is advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions against any further potential impacts.
