The streets of downtown Montevideo, Uruguay, witnessed a violent showdown on Monday afternoon as Cuban and Dominican nationals reportedly clashed over the control of the local drug trade, according to media reports.
Around 5 p.m., gunfire erupted on Yaguarón Street, between La Paz and Galicia, involving at least four armed individuals. One person was shot in the left leg, resulting in a fractured femur, and was promptly taken to a medical facility, as reported by Teledoce (Telemundo).
The injured man, whose identity remains undisclosed, is 36 years old and has a criminal record with nine past convictions. He had just been released from prison a week prior and, according to residents, manages a "drug point" in the area.
The police are treating the incident as a drug-related confrontation, explaining that the altercation occurred between Cubans and Dominicans who operate a drug selling spot at the intersection of Yaguarón and La Paz. The news portal Subrayado noted that the location is a gray building known for frequent visits by users, with a rival site just blocks away on Piedra Alta Street.
Following the shooting, the other involved individuals reportedly fled the scene. Residents of the neighborhood expressed shock and fear after the violent event, which was captured on video by a neighbor and shared on social media.
The investigation is being led by Montevideo's Operational Zone 1 Police.
In related incidents, a Cuban national was recently arrested in Argentina during a police operation that dismantled a drug trafficking network in the cities of Neuquén capital and Añelo. Throughout 2024, other Cubans have been linked to various criminal activities in Uruguay. In November, a Cuban man was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison for multiple offenses, including aggravated sexual assault, domestic violence, personal injuries, and ammunition trafficking. He will be deported to Cuba upon completing his sentence.
In the preceding month, two Cubans were apprehended for attempting to smuggle illegal goods into Uruguay, with one allegedly trying to bribe the officers. Additionally, three more Cubans were arrested in the department of Maldonado for attacking law enforcement officers and damaging a police vehicle.
