Saturday, April 12, 2025 by James Rodriguez

A fire that broke out this Friday at the Cotorro brewery, located in the Havana municipality of the same name, prompted authorities to evacuate nearby residents as a precautionary measure due to the risk of collapse or a potential ammonia leak, a chemical used in the plant's industrial operations.

Emerio González Lorenzo, president of the Food Industry Business Group, reported that the blaze originated in a building that used to house a beer cooler at the brewery. "All fire department resources were deployed from the early morning hours, and the surrounding population was evacuated as a preventive measure," he stated.

The authorities from the Communist Party and the government arrived at the scene. Journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso confirmed that efforts are still underway to control the fire. "Residents near the area have been evacuated. Firefighters, the Red Cross, public health officials, and Havana authorities are present at the site. Canal Caribe is also there. We will have updates shortly and in the 1 PM news broadcast," he announced on Facebook.

The threat of an ammonia leak has been a major concern, given that this gas is highly toxic. Although no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far, authorities are closely monitoring efforts to extinguish the fire and ensure safety in the area.

The community residents, who heard the sirens of emergency vehicles and saw the thick column of smoke early on, remain vigilant while authorities work to contain the fire. Numerous photos shared on social media depict the severity of the emergency.

Despite the dramatic deployment of resources, the exact cause of the fire at the plant, which produces beer and other alcoholic beverages, remains unknown. Firefighters continue to work tirelessly.

Meanwhile, local residents anxiously await as firefighting efforts proceed and security measures remain on high alert. The fire has deeply affected the local community.
