This week, authorities apprehended the individual responsible for the heinous murder of Artemio Luna Nápoles, a 69-year-old resident of Songo La Maya, Santiago de Cuba, as confirmed by sources connected to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint). The suspect, Leodan Silva, who lived nearby, committed the crime with the intention of stealing a television, according to the Facebook page "Héroes del Moncada."

Official reports indicate that Luna was violently struck on the head with an object, leading to his death, and his lifeless body was discovered in his backyard, as per eyewitness accounts from the Maya Este community. Independent outlet CubaNet provided a preliminary report stating that Luna was killed in his Belleza neighborhood home on the morning of April 6th, allegedly for his pension check and a Panda-brand TV.

Relatives and neighbors mentioned that Luna lived alone, which the attacker may have exploited to carry out the crime more easily. Witnesses at the time claimed that stones were used to fatally wound him. Dianelis Mina, a neighbor, told CubaNet that "his house was ransacked, apparently in search of the pension check he had cashed the previous day. It seems they called him outside, and once he emerged, they killed him."

Witnesses agreed that the police did not arrive at the scene until about three in the afternoon, roughly 10 hours after the murder, during which time the body remained under the sun. Another local resident warned that such violent events are not isolated incidents, as at least three similar occurrences have recently taken place, fostering an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents who now hesitate to go out at night or leave their homes unattended.

Santiago de Cuba province has seen an alarming rise in criminal activities, including murders and violent robberies, highlighting a decline in public safety over recent years. In late March, after nearly two months missing, Agustín Rodríguez Domínguez's body was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition in the Chicharrones district of the city.

Last year, a series of murders targeting security guards at their workplaces were reported, aimed at robbing the establishments. Authorities arrested Alex Recasén Suárez, accused of being responsible for two of these murders, which shocked the residents of Santiago de Cuba.
