A man was apprehended this Sunday in the capital's district of Central Havana while engaging in drug trafficking, according to reports from pro-government social media profiles. The individual, known as Page, was allegedly selling narcotics in the La Victoria neighborhood within the Pueblo Nuevo council area of Central Havana when law enforcement intervened.

Elizabeth Ferrer, a social media user affiliated with the Cuban government, shared that local residents alerted the police about the man's "suspicious activity," leading to his arrest. "The individual referred to as Page has been involved in the sale of illegal substances," Ferrer noted, adding that he is a former convict with a history of similar offenses.

During the arrest, both the drugs and substantial amounts of cash were confiscated. Ferrer expressed gratitude, crediting the swift response of the national police, who have intensified their anti-drug efforts following numerous reports on social media and independent Cuban outlets.

Police Operations Expand Across Havana

This weekend also saw a police operation in the Bachiplán neighborhood of San Agustín, La Lisa. Officers from the Ministry of the Interior detained a suspect accused of distributing a substance known as "El químico," a highly addictive synthetic drug that has increasingly worried Cuban authorities.

In another raid, taking place in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, a suspected dealer of "El químico" was captured. This arrest occurred on Saturday night in the area referred to as Habana Nueva, in a surprise action carried out by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) forces.

Underlying Issues Fuel Drug Trade Concerns

These arrests are happening amid growing public concern about drug presence in vulnerable Havana communities, where clandestine sales points flourish despite increased police measures. Despite the so-called "crusade" against drugs, both experts and citizens agree that institutional responses remain more reactive than preventive and have struggled to effectively address the rapidly advancing problem, particularly among the youth.

The spread of drugs in these communities is not a new phenomenon but rather the outcome of years of neglecting factors that contribute to its growth, such as economic stagnation, deteriorating social services, and ineffective public policies aimed at addiction prevention.
