Living the RV Life: Cuban Woman Shares Her Monthly Costs and Journey to Home Ownership in the U.S.

A young Cuban woman residing in the United States has sparked both debate and empathy on social media after revealing on TikTok the monthly expenses of living in a recreational vehicle (RV). Identifying herself as @carolina_makeup_99 on the platform, Carolina, 26, explained that she and her husband have chosen to embrace this lifestyle full-time. "Hello, I'm Cuban, I'm 26 years old, and I live in a little RV house with my husband full-time," she began in one of her latest videos.

Carolina expressed that she has faced judgment for her living choice, stating, "I hate to disappoint a little because many people think living in an RV is cheap or for the poor. I've been called poor in the comments, and that's simply not true," she asserted, clearly frustrated by the stereotypes. She detailed that their RV was financed, with a monthly payment of $700, in addition to $950 for their current parking spot in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. "It's not cheap here because we're 10 minutes from the LNG Plant, so we pay $950, and it really doesn't offer much, just a post to connect the trailer," she lamented. The RV insurance costs an additional $110 per month, bringing their expenses in line with traditional apartment or house rent.

The video quickly garnered reactions. One user commented, "Honey, I lived in an RV, and my life is very happy," while another remarked, "Only those who live in Cuba say that," referring to the derogatory comments. Another follower pointed out, "Poor but happy, at least you're paying for your house, friend." Carolina responded with humor, "Yes, my life, haha, you know how it is... thanks, mameee."

Some questioned the financial aspect of this lifestyle choice. "If it's the same as rent, with no savings or benefits, what's the point?" a user asked. Carolina emphasized the freedom it provides, not being tied to a conventional lease. "The important thing is that we're happy," she concluded, receiving support from fellow Cubans and Latinos in the U.S. "You have your roof, a comfy bed to sleep in, no cold, shelter from the heat, clothes, shoes, and food... who is poor?" another user defended.

In an earlier video, Carolina had explained the RV purchasing process, describing it as straightforward, largely dependent on one's credit. She clarified that their RV was financed with a 10% down payment, amounting to $8,000. "You must take it insured from the dealer, as it's a requirement. They also sell many accessories you'll need once you take the RV, such as fresh water pipes, drain hoses, voltage protectors, and more," she added. She invited her followers to leave questions for future responses.

Days earlier, Carolina showcased the interior of her "Eagle" model RV on the same platform. Featuring a modern design kitchen, solid countertops, hanging lamps, and optimized spaces, the video depicted a nomadic yet comfortable lifestyle, chosen by many migrant families to combat high rental costs in the U.S.
