Silvio Rodríguez Acknowledges Cuba's Material and Spiritual Decline: “I Don’t Blame Everything on the Blockade”

Tuesday, April 15, 2025 by Mia Dominguez

Celebrated Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez has once again addressed the severe crisis facing Cuba, this time with words full of sorrow and introspection. In a recent interview with the Chilean newspaper La Tercera, the creator of 'El necio' acknowledged that his homeland is experiencing profound deterioration, not only materially but also spiritually.

As Rodríguez gears up for upcoming concerts in Chile this September, he echoed the narrative of the island's authoritarian regime, asserting that Cuba has suffered from what he termed a "genocidal" blockade. Yet, true to his nature, the troubadour also adopted a self-critical stance, emphasizing that not everything can be blamed on U.S. sanctions. “While I am convinced that the blockade has caused our greatest difficulties, I am not among those who blame it for everything,” he stated.

The 78-year-old musician discussed “mistakes, political and economic dogmas” that, along with external pressures, have contributed to the country's and its people's wear and tear. “This has led to a deterioration not only materially but also spiritually, manifesting in the frivolities and citizen apathy we deal with daily,” he lamented.

His remarks add to a series of statements made in recent months, where he has shown growing concern over the erosion of national dignity and the mass exodus of young people. “Various signs suggest a gradual disappearance of national dignity. I sense it in everyday civic actions,” he recently wrote on his blog Segunda cita.

Rodríguez’s comments have sparked mixed reactions among the Cuban public and supporters of the regime. In March, the head of the Presidential Press Office responded to his criticisms, but the troubadour has maintained his critical tone, asserting that grave errors continue to be made in the country's governance.

Renowned as one of the most influential voices of Cuba's Nueva Trova movement, Rodríguez has often expressed discontent with the Cuban reality, while maintaining a stance of critical engagement. In 2024, he expressed understanding for young people emigrating from the country, describing the internal situation as “terrible.”

He concluded his reflection with a message that was both somber and hopeful: “These are times when keeping the faith is not easy. But we must persevere and move forward.”
