This Tuesday, the Villa Clara Health Directorate disclosed the findings of an investigation following the viral spread on social media of an appalling video dated April 10. The footage depicted a staff member from the "Dr. Luis San Juan Pérez" Provincial Psychiatric Hospital repeatedly striking a patient. In a statement shared on Facebook this Monday, Juan José Pulido López, head of Health in Villa Clara, confirmed that the "regrettable assault" transpired approximately 35 days ago. The investigation, conducted by a multidisciplinary committee, identified a staff member referred to as H.B.C. as the perpetrator. This individual had been hired on July 1, 2024, as an emergency service assistant.
"During questioning, the individual admitted to participating in this deplorable act, which starkly contradicts the ethical and humanistic values that underpin our health system," the statement detailed. Following the inquiry, the worker was permanently dismissed from their position, and the matter has been forwarded to judicial authorities for potential criminal proceedings.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the victim and their family, sincerely regretting the distress caused," the statement emphasized. The Health Directorate also condemned the actions of the person who recorded the incident.
"We firmly denounce the inhumane behavior of the individual who filmed the video. Not only did they witness the assault without intervening, but they also chose to share it on social media instead of reporting it immediately, demonstrating a shocking lack of compassion and responsibility," the publication added.
"We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to upholding the dignity of our patients and will tirelessly work to prevent such painful events from recurring, ensuring medical care that is rooted in respect, care, and humanity," concluded the official statement.
Previously, Villa Clara's provincial health authorities had issued a notice stating that an official investigation into the incident was underway. The recording, initially shared by user Rubén Carrillo on his X account, shows a patient being violently beaten.
Although the circulated video lacks audio, the visuals have sparked outrage and condemnation across social media and among the public. This incident of abuse in Cuban psychiatric institutions adds to recent complaints from families and activists about inadequate medical equipment, negligence, and substandard conditions in similar facilities across the country.
