Ryan Wolfe's two-run homer in the seventh inning rallied Canada to a 3-2 win over Cuba in the opening game for both teams Sunday at the Pam American softball championship.

Canada went into the seventh and final inning trailing 2-0 before pinch-hitter Derek Mayson of North Vancouver, B.C., singled to lead off. Rob Giesbrecht of Landmark, Man., followed and reached safely on a fielder's choice when the throw to second to get Mayson sailed high.

Ian Fehrman of Townsend, Ont., also reached on a fielder's choice when Cuba got Giesbrecht at second. Kevin Schellenberg of Squamish, B.C., drove home Mayson with a shot to left centre field before being caught at second. That left Fehrman at third and set the stage for the homer by Wolfe, of London, Ont., that came with two out and two strikes on the Canadian hitter,

"It was an inside drop ball, the third drop ball in a row that he threw to me,"Wolfe said. "Down 0-2 in the count, I just wanted to put the ball in play and fortunately it went out of the park."

Cuba led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the first and second off Canadian starter Nick Underhill of Campbell River, B.C. Underhill settled down after that, pitching three scoreless innings before being replaced by Rick Smith of Duncan, B.C., to start the sixth.

Smith finished the game to earn the win.

Canada was scheduled to play the United States later Sunday in the 10-team, round-robin tournament.
