The Cuban team to dispute the 16th World Inter-Continental Baseball Cup defeated Italy 3-2 on Sunday in a friendly game, with a crucial homer by outfielder Yoandry Urgellés.
Urgelles' homer in the third inning sealed the second victory of the defender champion in its preparatory commitments, because it previously defeated Australia 5-0.
Against all predictions, Italy offered resistance to the olympic monarchs, who punished starting pitcher Ricardo De Santis in the first innings, but were quieten down by the relievers.
The Cuban team's technical leadership blamed the "jet lag" for the poor performance, faced with a lower-level team, which gave two homers to relievers Yadel Marti and Pedro Luis Lazo.
Starting pitcher Frank Montieth struck out eight batters in four innings, and only put two rivals on base, both by free pass.
