Cuban health authorities expect to reduce the number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases by 30 percent, as a result of a nationwide program that is currently underway.
In order to achieve that goal, authorities are promoting activities to encourage healthy habits, improve diagnoses, train the medical staff, educate the people, and develop epidemiologic and medical research.
They are also fostering the use of new technologies and rehabilitation procedures to improve the quality of life of patients affected by cardiovascular diseases, which cause 10.2 percent of deaths in Cuba.
Over the past few years, the Caribbean Island has reported a rise in the number of deaths caused by those diseases, due to an increase in life expectancy to nearly 80 years.
Cuba has implemented a nationwide program since 2000 to reduce extra-hospital mortality.
