Grand Master Lazaro Bruzon regained the Cuban chess crown in five minutes Wednesday defeating defending champ GM Leinier Domínguez. In 2006, it was Dominguez who beat Bruzon in five minutes.
The two chess rivals now hold three championships each.
Just as last year, the match was decided in the second five minute speed game in which Bruzon, with the white pieces, used a Reti Opening which he had already tried in the second 25-minute match.
"I was in a difficult situation, he had a pawn advantage, but I had a lot of compensation and the initiative. In speed matches it is more difficult to defend than attack and I was able to find the best opportunities," said Bruzon amid the applause of hundreds of chess enthusiasts attending the competition.
