According to the President of Cuba's National Council for Cultural Patrimony (CNPC), Manuel Palacios, the island has also devoted a budget of more than one million Cuban pesos to the renovation of the farm where the writer of "The old man and the sea" lived.
Palacios pointed out that the restoration works will be completed late this year or early in 2008. The total budget will amount over one million dollars and four million Cuban pesos.
The Cuban official condemned the US blockade of the island which prevents the financial cooperation between the CNPC and the US Social Science Research Council in accordance with an agreement signed in 2002.
The Hemingway Museum hosts over 22,000 items including books, photographs, films, hunting trophies, weapons and sport equipment. So far, a large number of Hemingway's letters and documents have been digitalized and preserved.
Palacios said the works include the restoration of the yacht Pilar, the bungalow, the garage and the swimming pool where actress Ava Gardner bathed.
Director of Hemingway Museum, Ada Rosa Alfonso, and the Cuba-United States exchange coordinator, Gladys Rodríguez, also denounced the Washington interventionist policy which hinders the works of restoration and conservation undertaken.
