Cuba reduces use of chemicals in agriculture

Cuba has reduced the use of chemical pesticides by 50 percent replacing them with biological products and favoring the development of natural enemies of insects that plague crops.
Maximo Martinez, vice director of the National Vegetable Health Center, said more than 1.5 million hectares of vegetables and fruits are protected every year using biological products.
There are more than 200 centers in the country that produce two different microorganisms, one of them infects crop predators, and the other one feeds itself with the plague bugs.
Likewise, a bio-plant donated by China has been constructed in Matanzas for the production of solid biological products, which are more effective than the liquids.
In addition to the benefits to the crops and the environment, the use of biological products also reduces costs.
