The Cuban eastern province of Camagüey reported a substantial increase in sorbitol production in 2006.
The province has the only sorbitol-producing plant in the country, which produced 1,356 tons of that substance last year, the second largest output since its inauguration in 1993.
The plant has a potential production capacity of 10,000 tons of sorbitol a year, and its main markets are Cuban companies that make soap and cosmetics.
The plant, which is equipped with French technology, is operated by highly-trained workers from the Ministry of the Sugar Industry.
Sorbitol, which is mainly obtained from corn glucose, is also used to keep an adequate humidity level in some products, to sweeten candies and pies, and in the pharmaceutical industry to make laxatives and vitamin C.
