Cuba's Pan-American Epee Champion at Santo Domingo 2003 Eimey Gomez leads the island's fencing team to the 2nd Games of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, slated to run from April 27 through May 3 in Valencia, Venezuela.
The Cuban collective will also include another five Epee experts such as Zuleydis Ortiz and Yamilka Rodríguez. The team is also made up of six saber and six foil experts.
The methodologist of the National Fencing Commission Rigoberto Morejon told acn that the ALBA games will be very important for Cubans to evaluate their preparation for the 15th Pan-American Games to take place next June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"Our athletes are very optimistic and we are sure that they will do a great job at the South American meet, although they will face strong Venezuelan counterparts", said Morejon.
The Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, ALBA, is a regional integration initiative launched by Venezuela and Cuba in many fields of society, including sports. ALBA, meaning DAWN, was launched as a Latin American and Caribbean alternative to the failed US project Free Trade Area of the Americas, FTAA.
