Cuba's film "El Benny," by filmmaker Jorge Luis Sanchez, will open the eighth Havana Film Festival in New York, April 13-19, devoted this year to Cuban actor Jorge Perugorria (Fresa y Chocolate).
This first work by Sanchez is about the life of one of the Island's most important musicians, Benny More.
Over 20 full-length films from 15 countries will be shown in the festival, with Cuba attending with two feature films and one documentary, all prizewinners at the New Latin American Cinema Festival in Havana 2006.
The tribute to Perugorria is to include a retrospective of his films. He is also expected to attend a panel on marketing and distribution.
Founded in 2000 by Carole Rosenberg, a cultural activist and also president of the American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba, the Havana Film Festival New York is set to become a cultural bridge between the US and Cuba through cultural exchange programs.
