Cuban pitcher Yoslan Herrera has signed a 3-year, free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Herrera, 25, will be given a signing bonus of $750,000 and salaries of $380,000, $390,000 and $400,000. The newspaper said performance bonuses could total $1.2 million.
Herrera had an 18-7 record and 3.27 earned run average in Cuba before defecting in 2005. He pitched in the Dominican Republic last season.
"Yoslan enjoyed a successful career while pitching in Cuba," said General Manager Dave Littlefield. "He's a right-handed starter with a good arm and someone who has been very intriguing to us based on his international success."
