Seven Cuban tae kwon do fighters, including six who won the title at a tournament in Colombia, qualified for the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007.
Gesler Viera (68 kg), Gerardo Ortiz (+80 kg), Mirna Echevarría (+67 kg), Dianellis Montejo (49 kg) and Lixan Batista (58 kg) finished first in their respective divisions.
In addition, Taimí Castellanos qualified after finishing second in the 67-kg division, while world runner-up Yanelis Labrada (57 kg) was eliminated in her first fight.
The continental tae kwon do union agreed to allow Angel Volodia Matos to compete in the 80-kg division at the Rio games.
For her part, Labrada must compete in another qualifying event or perhaps receive a wild card to participate in the Pan-American Games.
