Nice passing led to nice shooting.
Tenacious defense paved the way for both for the Santa Fe Indian School girls basketball team.
Three players had five assists or more as the Lady Braves beat Cuba 77-51 at Cuba on Saturday. SFIS (2-0) built leads of 22-15 after one quarter and 43-24 at the half before head coach Johnny Abeyta turned most of the second half over to his bench.
Senior Sherelle Begay topped the assists chart with nine to go with 16 points. April Abeyta was the Lady Braves' high scorer with
17 points and had five assists, while Marcelita Povijua has seven assists and nine points. Povijua also had five steals, and Abeyta four.
Coach Abeyta said he was impressed with how his team -- which lost three starters to graduation last year -- has found chemistry so early in the season.
"They are starting to understand their responsibilities and get their own identity," coach Abeyta said. "We still have three or four seniors, but the rest are freshmen and sophomores, and they're starting to learn how to play together."
It might be short-lived. SFIS goes on Thanksgiving break after its home opener on Monday against Dulce. The players will spend time with their families away from the campus.
