The Cuban delegation that participates in the 61st Session of the UN General Assembly was warmly received in Harlem, New York.

"We know that this neighborhood is the cradle of solidarity with the Cuban Revolution," said Esteban Lazo, Vice President of Cuba's Council of State and Head of the delegation as he recalled the warm welcome offered by the Harlem community to Cuban President Fidel Castro when he first visited the United Nations in September 1960.

During the welcome ceremony at Harlem's Church of the Intercession, Reverend Lucius Walker, director of the Pastors for Peace inter-religious group said that Cuba deserves plenty of gratitude.

Recalling Cuba's humanitarian gesture after the passage of Hurricane Katrina on US southern territories, Reverend Walker said that, "we thank Cuba for the doctors and experts it was ready to send in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and that the Bush government did not accept."

He also expressed his appreciation for Cuba's granting 110 medicine scholarships to US youths at the Havana-based Latin American School of Medicine and he recalled the island's contribution to the struggle of African nations like Angola and against Apartheid in South Africa.

In the solidarity-with-Cuba ceremony the Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild, Heidi Bogosian, referred to the case of the Cuban Five antiterrorism fighters held in US prisons and she condemned the illegitimate process they have undergone.

Bogosian announced that a huge march will take place on Saturday, September 23rd in Washington, in which demonstrators will demand the immediate release of the Cuban Five.

The audience burst into happy applause when Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque reported that President Fidel Castro was recovering perfectly from surgery.
