Even though the climate this winter was completely adverse, urban agriculture could maintain its production targets in the first trimester of this year of harvesting 375,396 tons of vegetables and fresh condiments, 6% higher than that planned.

Most of this production is supplied to the dining rooms of education centers, health and social institutions, although in the smallholdings, intensive orchards and areas of semi-protected cultivation it is marketed directly to the population as part of the crop.

Dr. Adolfo Rodríguez Nodals, head of the National Urban Agriculture Group, when finishing his 36th inspection tour of the whole country, gave Granma the full evaluation of the participating organizations, territories and working fronts.

At this stage, he pointed out, the reactivation of 163 hectares paralyzed by breakdowns of the watering equipment (electric and diesel), accumulated since 2005, had been completed. This fulfilled the commitment of the Ministry of Agriculture to the Second Secretary of the Central Committee, Raúl Castro.

The National Group especially recognized the effort of the provinces of Pinar del Rio, the City of Havana, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo for the execution of the plan and having achieved the highest qualifications in the evaluation tour.

It also praised the efforts of Havana, Cienfuegos, Granma, and the Special Municipality of Island of the Youth, which completed the Plan and achieved the qualification of Well Done, but with less excellent evaluations during this inspection.

The remaining four territories: Matanzas, Villa Clara, Las Tunas and Holguín, had not completed the production plan, although they achieved good qualifications in this inspection.

These results predict, Rodríguez pointed out, that the urban producers are in a position to complete the production program for the second trimester.
