Experts from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba are testing a new drug to treat ulcers in diabetic feet.
The Saturnino Lora and Joaquín Castillo Duany hospitals were included in a nationwide program to validate the efficacy of the drug.
So far, experts said, the evolution of patients is favorable after the administration of Citoprot-P, which is produced by the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center in the City of Havana.
Citoprot-P speeds up the cicatrization of ulcers in diabetic feet and prevents amputation, a procedure that is necessary in up to 25 percent of patients.
In order to validate the efficacy of Citoprot-P, the drug will be tried and administered for one year, a period during which patients with deep ulcers will be treated.
Treatments with Citoprot-P are a new alternative to cure lesions in diabetic feet.
