This years International Matamoroson Festival, under the theme To the Rhythm of the Son, is dedicated to traditional dance and the tres "both a genre of music and a guitar featuring three courses of two strings that revolutionized Cuban son music. The festival takes place October 18 to 22 in Santiago de Cuba, and features a massive line-up of Cuban and international groups.

Among the headlining Cuban orchestras are Los Van Van, Adalberto Alvarez y Su Son, Manolito Simonet y Su Trabuco, Pupy y Los Que Son Son, Candido Fabre y Su Banda, La Original de Manzanillo, el Grupo de Compay Segundo, Soneros de Camacho, Eliades Ochoa y Su Grupo Patria, La Familia Valera-Miranda, Los Rítmicos de Palma and Karachi. Among the international groups are Santera de Viena (Australia), Somos Caiman (Holanda), the young Japanese singer Makoto Sasaki and casino rueda dancers from the Dominican Republic.

The festival is dedicated to the memory of Arsenio Rodríguez (who would have turned 95 on August 30), Walfrido Guevara (who would have turned 90), and homage will be paid to Enrique Bonne (80) and Roberto Napoles (95).

The opening event will take place in Cespedes Park and concerts will be held throughout the city. During the festival, a symposium will be held entitled Tradition and Roots of Son in Current Cuban Music. This will take place at the provincial office of the Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC)

Among the other activities will be a tres competition and a panel discussion on this instrument. Several Cuban tres specialists including Olavo Alen, Jesus Gomez Cairo, Jose Reyes Fortun and Lino Betancour will be featured, and during the discussion, tres specialists from Columbia Pablo Delvalle and Isidoro Korkidi, and from Uruguay Coriun Aharonian.
