In an interview with a Viet Nam News Agency reporter on Dec 29 on the occasion of Cuba's National Day (Jan 1, 1959 - Jan 1, 2007), the diplomat elaborated:
In 2006, apart from 400,000 tonnes of rice, Cuba imported electronic products, coke coal, footwear and garments from Vietnam. Meanwhile, its exports to Vietnam valued at US$3mil. The export earnings of Cuba are to be larger next year since a number of Cuban enterprises have registered to provide products for the Vietnamese market.
The two countries will boost cooperation in rice growing, making construction materials and providing counsel and supervision concerning road building.
Cuba has made steady development in education, health care and social security. The country saw constant economic growth reaching 12.5% in 2006 despite the US embargo.
The Cuban diplomat, who has studied Vietnam for 15 years, expressed his confidence that the Southeast Asian country would reach its target of a prosperous population, a powerful country, and an equitable and civilised society.
