Starting at 10:00 local time, people run or walked in several Cuban provinces as part of the Marathon of Hope, an event to encourage a healthy way of life and raise funds to fight cancer.

Proceeds worth $140,000 from the Terry Fox Run held over the last few years in Cuba have been allocated to research at the National Oncology and Radiology Center of Cuba.

The race pays tribute to Terry Fox, a Canadian youth diagnosed with bone cancer at age 18. He lost his right leg, but this did not plunge him into dispair and he almost made it across Canada in a coast to coast attempt to raise consciousness for the fight against cancer.

The Cuban "Marathon of Hope," as Terry Fox's historic run was originally called, boasts the largest number of participants out of Canada.

This year Cubans will also stage special races in Varadero, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Avila and Holguin.
