Traces of Spain: A Cultural Festival that Unites the Cuban and Spanish Peoples

The upcoming Cultural Festival “Traces of Spain” is an example of friendship between two peoples, of the preservation of their cultural heritage, and of their capacity to carry out joint projects, said the director of Cuba’s National Ballet Company (BNC) Alicia Alonso.

During a working lunch with the national and foreign press on Tuesday, Alicia recalled that this encounter between the Spanish and Cuban cultures has been taking place since 1988, thanks to efforts made by artists and technicians from the two countries.

One of the most important moments of the Festival, will be the presentation of the 17th century allegorical religious piece ‘La divina Filotea’, by a classic author of Spain’s Golden Age, Calderón de la Barca; it will be performed by the Spanish Theater Company under the direction of Pedro María Sánchez.

Sanchez told ACN that culture unites peoples by way of a bridge, in which the best values of each one converge.

Selected as the best piece of the 30th Almagro Theater Festival, according to its director, ‘La divina Filotea’ is an exceptional production stemming from the origins of contemporary theater, like that of German Bertold Brecht.

He praised the participation of Cuban artists, like those with the Camerata Romeu, and he underscored that the public should not miss the performances scheduled for June 7, 8, and 9 at Havana’s St. Francis of Assisi Minor Basilica.

Cuban actor Vladimir Cruz, very popular as the co-star in the film ‘Strawberry and Chocolate’, said that he has been on the play’s cast since it was premiered. He commented that this presentation offers him a special opportunity, in which he plays the role of La Lascivia (Lasciviousness).

Cruz added that this premiere in Havana is being prepared in an environment of creation and fraternity, and that it will certainly leave an everlasting imprint in the Cuban cultural scene, since a 17th century allegorical religious piece has not been presented in Cuba for a long time.
