In Holguín Cuba: First Paleobotanical Investigation in “Chorro de Maita”

The first paleobotanical investigation of the remains collected in the aboriginal site “Chorro de Maita,” in the municipality of Banes, Holguin, is being carried out by a group of Cuban and American archaeologists as part of the joint research project “Contacto indohispánico.”

The project will further investigate economic practices and the vegetable life of the aboriginal community that inhabited this area around 1220 C.E.

The excavations carried out include three research units, some 12 square meters in total and several layers of soil.

Cuban archaeologist Roberto Valcarcel Rojas who heads this and other recent projects in Maita, reported that this second stage of work began last June 15 and will run through July 9 with the help of archaeologists from the University of Alabama, led by Dr. Vernon James Knight.
