LatAm Youth to March across Cuba

Dominican, Venezuelan and Cuban youths will walk some 621 miles, from eastern to western Cuba, to pay tribute to Latin American heroes.

Young Cuban lawyer Alejandro Gonzalez-Coya, one of the participants in the march, told Prensa Latina the journey will kick off on July 8 in Playitas de Cajobabo, Guantanamo, where Cuban National Hero Jose Marti and Dominican General Maximo Gomez landed in 1895 to resume the war of independence against Spain.

According to Gonzalez-Coya, the 34-day march will end in Havana"s Revolution Square on August 13.

He added that 12 people will start the march, but they expect more youths to join them along the walk.

"We plan to pay tribute to Latin American heroes like Marti, Simon Bolivar, the fathers of the Dominican homeland, Gomez, Ramon Matias Mella and Juan Pablo Duarte, and guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara," he noted.

"Our region is only one, with only one situation and a dialectical unity of thought, so this initiative is a call for unity and world peace," he said.

Gonzalez-Coya went on to say their goal is to denounce the situation of five Cuban antiterrorists held in US prisons after a trial in which the principles of US and international law were violated.
