The New Latin-American Cinema Festival held every year in Havana in December

The New Latin-American Cinema Festival held every year in Havana in December comes to its thirty series. This year’s Festival will be held in Havana from December 2nd to 12, keeping its condition as an exceptional space to get in contact with Latin American cinema productions.

This year, the organizers have decided to celebrate its 30 years of existence ―this is a considerable amount of time for a cinema festival―, with new spaces and incentives, facing the transformations and perspectives of the present day Latin-American cinema while keeping its usual spaces.

The most significant of these spaces, which aims to become a permanent section in the Festival, is called “” [Cinema Industry] and it is designed mainly to a give some response to the rising talents and the new projects aimed at safeguarding national identity in the region.

“Cine Industria” envisages different sections. In the first place the so-called Latinoamérica Primera Copia, to be held from December 8 to 12. During this section, there will be awarding of prizes agreed with the ALBA Cultural project and sponsored by the Cinema and Audiovisual Media Platform of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and ICAIC, assigned to the completion of audiovisual works needed of resources to be finished. The prizes to be selected by an international jury and given to those productions needed of financing for its completion reaches a total amount of 150,000 dollars.

The Latin-American Script Workshop, to be held from December 1st to 6. In this section, there will be a selection of ten full-length film scripts, with the purpose of assessing their evaluation and development with experienced and worldwide known scriptwriters.

This offer, which will no doubt benefit the making of these projects, will start from the scripts reaching the final in the Script Contest of last year’s Festival, as well as from a especial announcement for Cuban scriptwriters.

The Latin-American Films Seminar crossing borders will be held from December 2nd to 4th. This is a Seminar sponsored by the AUTOR Foundation and the Buñuel Institute, in association with the International Festival of New Latin-American Cinema of Havana, the Cuban Institute for Cinematographic Art and Industry (Spanish ICAIC) and the International Cinema School in San Antonio de los Baños (Spanish EICTV).

The Seminar is addressed to Latin-American professionals from the audiovisual sector, with the fundamental objective of helping the attending to develop their audiovisual projects (regardless of whether they are fiction, animation or documentaries) out of their mother countries. It will give them the opportunity to know and interact with prestigious experts and professionals from different sectors within the European and Latin-American audiovisual industries in a direct, personal way in work teams and individual interviews.

The space Nuevas Miradas [New Looks], to be held from December 5th to 7th, is a project promoted by the Production Department of the EICTV which has the support of the organizers of the International Festival of New Latin-American Cinema, the New Latin-American Cinema Foundation and the ICAIC. Basically, it involves a market for professional projects in development designed for students specialized in Production graduated from EICTV in San Antonio de los Baños, and young Cuban producers. Fiction, documentary and cinema and/or TV animation project can be candidates for admission.

Finally, the Festival re-opens a specific market, the Market of Cuban Audiovisuals, intended for buying the distribution and exhibition rights of independently produced audiovisual works in the Cuban territory. ICAIC and ICRT have created a yearly fund to acquire the rights of these audiovisual materials in the national territory. The market will be opened from December 4 to 11.
