Gustavo Robreño, vice-president of the José Martí Cultural Society, pointed out that such date was chosen to start the event, because on this date, but of 1891, the newspaper of the Liberal Party published in Mexico the essay Nuestra America (Our America), written in New York by the Cuban National Hero.
In the announcement there were also present as guests the ambassadors of Cuba in the UNESCO, Héctor Hernández Pardo, and in Mexico, Manuel Aguilera, as well as the ex president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Carazo.
In the event there were also be present in the central building of the Autonomous University of the state of Yucatán intellectuals of different latitudes, including some from France, the United Stated, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.
The main point of the agenda of the encounter centers on a thematic debate called "Marti´s thinking in the presence of threatened humanity" and it also hatches on other topics of political and economic character and on the environment.
The environmental topic will figure as one of the main elements of the current event, as a preview to the international colloquy for the culture of nature, that is to take place Havana in 2010.
In reference to the encounter dedicated to the apostle of the independence of Cuba, the director of the Yucatec newspaper, Por Esto , Mario Menéndez, received the medal La Utilidad de la Virtud , which will be awarded by the José Martí Cuban Cultural society.
