Two weeks before the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change, Cuba reiterated at the UN the need to change current production and consumption patterns, and advance towards a truly sustainable economic model.

Human survival calls for a world energy revolution, the Cuban permanent representative at the UN, Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, affirmed during an informal meting of the General Assembly.

The diplomat thus presented what he called eight truths on climate change that cannot be ignored or concealed. Another reality, he noted, it is the need to establish a stricter system for developed nations to reduce gas emissions.

In addition, it is imperative to adopt stronger actions for technology transfer and funding of developing nations, and industrialized countries must comply with commitments of the Convention on climate change.

The Cuban representative also urged developed nations to have active participation in global actions to reduce climate change, in line with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and respective capacities.

Nuñez Mosquera pointed out that ahead of the Copenhagen meeting, industrialized countries show no firm political willingness to cut gas emissions in proportion to their historic and current responsibilities.

Reaching a fair, balanced agreement in the matter is still possible if "we face the negotiation process with a new political stance," the Cuban ambassador sustained.
