The Regional Toxicology Center in Santa Clara, Villa Clara saved the lives of more than 200 people from the provinces of Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus and Cienfuegos in 2009.

According to the Center’s director, Leonardo Lima, prescription drugs are the main cause of intoxication, due to self-medication and children who accidentally take pills.

Other causes include the accidental ingestion of pesticides or other chemical products such as disinfectants, bleach and ammonia.

Founded on January 15, 2008, the Regional Toxicology Center offers comprehensive treatments to all patients suffering from intoxication including offering a 24-hour telephone helpline.
