More Than Thirty Cuban Athletes to Compete in IAAF World Championships

Havana, Cuba.- More than 30 athletes will represent Cuba at the 13th World Championships in Athletics, organized and scheduled by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for August 27 to September 4 in Daegu, South Korea. In a press communiqué released on Monday, the national commissioner of the sport, Aurelio Romero, announced that the Cuban delegation will be led by reigning Olympic champion and world record holder Dayron Robles (Men’s Sprint Hurdles) and by world champion Yargelis Savigne (Women’s Triple Jump). Nyad ends 2nd attempted swim from Cuba to Florida

HAVANA (AP)—Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad ended her second bid to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys about halfway through her journey early Tuesday.Elaine Lafferty, who was on the boat according to Nyad’s blog, posted on Twitter: “It’s over.” Lafferty said “the combination of factors was too much to safely continue.” According to the Twitter feed, Nyad was pulled from the water early in the morning after swimming for 29 hours. The swim was expected to take 60 hours to cover at least 103 miles (166 kilometers). Read More

<p style="text-align: justify;">HAVANA (AP) — Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad was making good headway through the Florida Straits despite some physical complaints Monday, about one-third of the way into her attempt to log a record swim at the age of 61. While Nyad was pausing only briefly for nourishment and is not allowed to touch the support boat, her team kept fans and well-wishers up to date through social media."Diana is swimming strongly. Time to get closer to Cuba

<p style="text-align: justify;">Last month Cuba and the United Kingdom signed a formal declaration to strengthen bilateral co-operation. The agreement champions "closer dialogue and economic, scientific, technical, educational, cultural and sporting links between the two countries" and highlights key areas for collaboration including environmental issues, biotechnology, trade and investment, regional security, child protection and disaster preparedness. The move should be welcomed as a positive step – not just by those supporting the Cuban people, but also by those looking to expand British trade relations in Latin America. Read More

Cuba scraps rave festival

The 2011 Rotilla festival had been scheduled for Aug 5-7 at Jibacoa beach, located about 57 km from Havana in Mayabeque province, but in its place and on the same dates authorities scheduled the new 'Summer youth concerts' at Jibacoa. Corruption investigation reported in Cuba
