Cuban activists have raised alarms this Thursday regarding threats against independent artist and political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, who is currently held in Guanajay prison in the province of Artemisa.
In a video posted on the social network X by Norges Rodríguez, CEO and co-founder of the digital media outlet YucaByte, art curator Claudia Genlui Hidalgo revealed that while she was speaking with Otero Alcántara via phone, a guard threatened to hang up the call.
Genlui expressed deep concern as Otero Alcántara had been on a hunger strike due to ongoing intimidation and harassment by prison and state security forces, a form of violence that has intensified in recent days.
"This psychological violence is severely affecting Luis Manuel, who has already endured more than enough, even to the point of urinating blood," stated the activist. She urged vigilance over any developments concerning the artist, especially given the Venezuelan people's struggle for truth following the presidential elections.
Similarly, Anamely Ramos highlighted the urgent situation and continuous threats: "The regime members are extremely nervous about what is happening in Venezuela."
"Going on hunger strikes is his only way to defend himself. He even said he would go to the ultimate consequences," Ramos stated tearfully, also mentioning Maykel Osorbo, another political prisoner unjustly detained by the island's dictators.
Just a few hours ago, Otero Alcántara communicated with Cuban activists and confirmed he had spent 10 days on a hunger strike. This information was shared on social media by Yanelys Nuñez, who has been calling attention to the plight of Otero Alcántara and other political prisoners in Cuba.
The young artist has endured long periods without communication and shows significant physical and mental deterioration as a result of three years of unjust imprisonment. He continues to advocate for his freedom through peaceful protest.
