Since last Wednesday, demolition work at the Li'l Abner Mobile Home Park has continued unabated, leaving hundreds of families in a state of uncertainty and distress as they watch their homes being torn down. The final closure of the park, scheduled for May, impacts over 900 families who now face the daunting task of finding new places to live.

The situation is particularly dire for many elderly residents who had hoped to enjoy their retirement in these homes. One such resident, Maday Villarreal, a 63-year-old Cuban, has resided in her home for a decade and now finds herself having to move in with relatives to avoid homelessness. For another affected resident, Reinaldo Oscariz, the emotional and financial toll is overwhelming. Just four months ago, Reinaldo invested his life savings and proceeds from his previous home in Westchester to purchase a mobile home at Lil Abner. Now, he is left without a clear plan.

Situations like these are all too common among the residents. Last week, a group of residents from the mobile home park protested outside Sweetwater City Hall following the forceful arrest of Vivian Hernández, a 61-year-old Cuban woman who had voiced her discontent over the demolitions at the administrative office.

The park's owner, CREI Holdings, announced the permanent closure in November, giving residents until May 19 to vacate the property. They offered $14,000 to those who left before January 31 as an incentive. However, this amount falls short in a county with one of the country's most expensive housing markets. The Urban Group, managing the relocation process, pledged to assist in moving mobile homes that can be relocated. Yet, finding available land in Miami-Dade poses a significant challenge.

The case of Li'l Abner is not an isolated one. Across Miami-Dade, mobile home parks are rapidly disappearing, making way for high-value residential and commercial developments. This trend leaves countless families in precarious situations, facing unaffordable markets and an uncertain future.
