Researchers from Cuba and the United States request that the thaw between Havana and Washington facilitate scientific cooperation, a field in which, with limitations and difficulties, both nations never quite became separated.
Since the US and Cuba announced the normalization of diplomatic ties last December, it is easier movement of scientists and obtain licenses from the Treasury Department of the US country to work with the island.
US now allows, for example, that its scientists attend conferences organized by Cuba without a specific license, something that was previously only possible if it was an event of an international organization.
Researchers in both countries have struggled in the past half century with restrictions of all kinds, the most difficult to overcome the resulting from economic, commercial and financial embargo that Washington has maintained on Havana and that only Congress, not the President, can lift.
