Dayron Robles Wins at Athletics Competition in Croatia

HAVANA, CUBA.-&nbsp; Cuban Dayron Robles, Olympic champion in the 110 meter hurdles in Beijing 2008, won on Tuesday the gold medal during the competition held in Zagreb, Croatia, sponsored by the International Athletics Federation. Robles, world record holder in this discipline with 12.87 seconds, showed once again that he’s at the peak of his fitness, when he arrived on the finishing line in a time of 13 seconds.&nbsp; Jason Richardson (USA-13.04), World Champion in Daegu, ended second, whiel David Oliver (USA-13.20), fourth at that Asian city’s competition, finished third. Cuba hits back at Richardson over failed visit

Bill Richardson of "blackmail" and slander on Wednesday, denying his claims that he was invited to the island to negotiate the release of a jailed American government subcontractor. In an exclusive interview with the Associated Press, the Foreign Ministry's head of North American affairs, Josefina Vidal, said Cuba closed the door on Richardson's request to even see imprisoned Maryland-native Alan Gross only after the American politician described him as a "hostage," in an interview with AP. Earthquake south of Cuba, no damage reported

HAVANA (Reuters) - A magnitude 6 earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea off the southern coast of Cuba on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of any damage on the island. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centred 67 miles (108 km) southwest of the Cuban town of Campechuela at a depth of 6.6 miles (10 km). The epicentre was about 70 miles (110 km) from the northern coast of Jamaica. Read More

Informational meeting on Friday on RMC trip to Cuba

A meeting is set for noon on Friday in the RMC Library seminar room for those interested in traveling to Cuba with a Rocky Mountain College professor. Dr. Jennifer Lyman, professor of environmental science and studies, will lead a birding, natural history and culture tour of Cuba, Feb. 24 through March 3, 2012. Cuba: U.S. embargo causes $1 trillion in losses

Cuba blames the U.S. embargo for nearly a trillion dollars in losses to the island's economy since it was imposed by President Kennedy in 1962. Vice Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said that at current prices a conservative estimate of economic damages to the island up until December 2010 would be more than $104 billion. However, he added, if you take into consideration the extreme devaluation of the dollar against the price of gold on the international financial market during 2010, they would add up to nearly a trillion dollars. Sherritt adds new director

<p style="text-align: justify;">Toronto-based Sherritt International Corp., Cuba’s largest private foreign investor, announced it added the chairman of a British telecom to its board of directors. Sir Richard Lapthorne, 68, is known for his high-profile stint as chairman of the company that owns Formula One team McLaren, but his background is mainly in the telecommunications industry. Since 2003, Lapthorne has been chairman of Cable &amp; Wireless, a London-based company with increasing interest in the Cuban telecommunications market. Read More

Cuba to Dissolve Inefficient Farming Cooperatives
