The most remarked characteristic of Cuban gastronomy is this mixture where the tomato sauce with few sautéed spices or Cuban sauce stands over the rest of the ingredients.

Cuba's Nexus Vocal Ensemble won first prize and a gold medal in its category in the recently concluded Mondial Choral Loto-Québec 2007 singing contest. Nexus also won the audience prize after obtaining the vote of 82 percent of the spectators.

At least 25 of the 113 municipalities of Michoacan State in Mexico have been declared free of illiteracy through the Cuban teaching method "Yo Si Puedo (Yes I Can)." Michoacan Gov. Lazaro Cardenas Batel presented certificates to the oldest students, representing the nearly 200,000 Michoacan residents who, thanks to their effort and dedication, learned how to read and write in the last five years.

The Cuban Structure and Material Development Research Center (CIDEM), part of Las Villas' Central University, won the World Habitat Award, sponsored by the United Nations. Doctor of Sciences Jose Martirena, director of the CIDEM Materials and Sustainable Construction group, told press those workers are the authors of the project that won the prize from among some 1,200 from the entire world.

Carilda came to life on July 6, 1922 out of the love between Caridad Labra and doctor Pedro Oliver, both Matanzas natives just as their darling daughter. She told me once her parents heard a young man calling out on his girlfriend "¡Carilda, Carilda!", and because they liked it they decided to name as such their first daughter.
